What do you do with 1.2 million residents of an uninhabitable city? Where do they live, work, learn?...how do they eat, clothe themselves? And how do you go about rebuilding entire infastructures of a city that no longer has buildings, schools, stores, houses, hospitals? It's a disaster unlike any we've seen here, and I think that will really become apparent as the initial media circus dies down and the real impact becomes apparent. Pray N.C. Senate members against the lottery would remain firm in their opposition. Pray that God would even be so gracious as to put more lawmakers in the 'No' column."

Okay...this is just a tad overboard. It's like they're saying that a lottery is 'un-Christian.' It is not! It's yet another example of leaders of the far-right of the Republican party trying to gain support by tying their platform to Christianity. Let me tell you, the lottery is in no way a religious issue, nor is it something to be prayed against. I can completely understand the anti-lottery platform...It's a tax against the poor, it sets a bad example for children, so on and so forth...these are very legitimate arguments. But trying to tie God into this whole mix, talking like he's some dude up above rooting against the lottery just as hard as the Christian Right is absolutely asinine.
The only way for politics to work is for it to be about political doctorine and not religious. Talk like this seperates people and blurs the line between political affiliations and religous/racial boundaries. I'm not trying to show this particular example as the root of the problems we're seeing...but it's certainly a testament to the direction in which we're going. Regular, God-fearing moderate and leftist Christians are being bullied and guilted into these positions because you are either "with God or not with him."
Religion != politics, and I'm sick of seeing these lines blurred. This is not just the opinion of a liberal...it's that of a rational person who sees that the opinions of liberals, as well as those of many moderate Republicans, are being invalidated needlessly, and stifling debate on very important issues.

That said, we have a lottery and it's a good thing. The way I see it, thousands of North Carolinians play the lottery anyway...fleeing to Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina to spend upwards of 300 Million dollars per year. Instead of ignoring it...we might as well have that money going toward our own schools. Fiscally it really doesn't make much sense not to have the lottery, because the money is going to be spent one way or the other.

Für Panik gibts kein Patent

I think the equal parts of sheer terror and utter excitement pretty much cancelled themselves out on the first day of college classes...I was pretty even-keeled about the whole thing. Another part of me wants to run to the school and set it ablaze, skipping away from the burning school as I sing 'Dancing Queen' and go straight into my first class at State.
But outweighing those two possibilities is the knowledge that I'll end up making this transition just as any other, like it's no transition at all.
I hope it all works out.

Take your straight line for a curve

I find it hard to express in words how happy I am that I decided to take a few weeks off before school began...it's been fantastic, and really needed. The grocery stocking business is more taxing than even I thought it was.
I had orientation at State on Monday and Tuesday. It was...interesting. Just a bunch of guys from rural Iredell and Wilkes county making fag jokes and thinking that they were going to get laid every hour, on the hour, starting the first night of orientation. Honestly it was nothing too impressive...and I'm further convinced that if these bozos can get through school, even half of them, that I'll be just fine.
My schedule ended up being pretty well balanced...when I first got it, it had me in class from 8 to 6:30 on Monday with nothing more than 30 minutes between classes, a class ending at 10 PM on Wednesday, with no classes Tuesday or Thursday and only 1 on Friday...but I got it fixed up real good now.
I also had to buy a parking space for the semester...I ended up getting one pretty close, but I have to walk through some woods that'll be awful dark at night. I guess I'll have to brush up on my Jujitsu in case I get mugged.

True colors fly in blue and black

Billions of dollars and countless manpower hours are spent making a 25 year old spaceship fly, and children in this country don't have healthcare...and the homeless starve...and small towns wither away to nothing as jobs go to Bangladesh and Maylasia...and soldiers fighting for their country on the streets of Tikrit and Kabul are protected themselves only by cheap armor because the government refuses to provide any better.

It's absolutely asinine.

Get Thai'd

I had a peek into the kitchen of the Jumbo China Buffet I had for lunch today, and it was full of a bunch of Hispanic men fixing the Chinese food...not quite what I expected.
It was enough to make you shed a single tear for the sheer beauty and bewilderment of American multiculturism.

Best collage ever. To use a cliché (impressed? I used the é! I guess not...) it seems like just yesterday that I stood in a blue robe and walked across that stage and gave Mr Hames an appreciative nod and Dr Humble a handshake. Just a couple of hours since I waded through the crowds to try to find family, to get a last glimpse of people who I know I wouldn't see for years, if ever again. And now it's mid-July. Freaking impossible.
I'm going to slow it down a little bit, and try to have at least 2 weeks this summer where I can relax a little and catch myself. I promised my grandfather I'd spend a week with him, fish a little in his boat and help him with his garden. I very literally cannot wait for that opportunity.

I hadn't heard Lynyrd Skynyrd in a long time, Thanks, random playlist.

Can't you smell that smell?

I'll show you a place high on the desert plain where the streets have no name

What's so wrong with the idea of 'Live and Let Live' ???
Seems so simple. Especially after seeing Hotel Rwanda last night, the old cliché really fits: We are so lucky to live here! We're in a place where our own intelligence can (usually) be used, if not to its full potential, to at least a greater actualization than those in other countries where intelligence is stifled, if not by the apathetic mindset of a hopeless citizen, then by poverty or disease or war or lack of educational opportunity. A place where we're able, without condemnation, to write patriotic run-on sentences on an internet blog. I get to go to college in a few months. Similar people of similar intellect in African, Asian, even European countries fight every day to stay alive, to be able to put dorowat or General Tso's Chicken or goulash on the table. It's hard not to ask myself why I'm here, born with a relative silver spoon in my mouth, while a man no different than me in temperment or raw intelligence starves to death in Bolivia or Sudan. And while working people in this country spend millions to have the chance to hypnotize themselves with their own personal bazaar of bright exploding colorful lights, and while NBC shows it's 7/4 special complete with the smiling faces of servicemen in bright white naval garb lit up by even brighter fireworks, and while an entire nation of 296 million sits with a smug grin on their faces, people live in pain. People suffer. I've never known pain, and neither have you. If I gave up my Xbox and my shiny red Ford Taurus and my midnight corned beef/provolone on wheat snack, and so did everybody else, maybe 5-year-old orphan Juanita wouldn't have to dig through the trash in Mexico City to find breakfast. Maybe not. I'm not saying we should give up material possessions but I do find it interesting that we sit in a continual vat of self-admiration and -obsession when so much can be done to make the world...as good and suffer-free as us. It makes me wonder what more we really can do...as a country, state, community, family, political party, religous mindset...or even what more I personally could do to give everybody else around the world smug faces of admiration at their surroundings, thankful for all they have and that they must not suffer.

In other news, I had a weird dream last night. It isn't a recurring dream but it is a dream with a recurring setting. It's an Australian grocery store. It's the weirdest feeling, I woke up and remembered the dream out of the clear blue today, and the setting is a familiar one because I've had at least one dream set there before, but a long time ago, like maybe a year or two ago. This grocery store is different. The ceilings are maybe 15 feet up and the walls are taupe-painted sheetrock without adornment. The shelves are sparsely stocked, and all I can remember is the chip aisle and the ice cream aisle. All they had was bags of (dry?) tortilla chips. I don't know why I'm there, or what sets it apart as a grocery store in Australia, but for some reason it is. It's not like me to remember a dream in this detail (and truth be told, I don't remember the dream itself, but I do remember the setting...). I wonder what Freud would say.

I should also note that I tried to change the time on this post to 17:76 in a symbolic gesture of the day. But, alas, there is no 76th minute of the hour.

Turn on your lights when it's raining, jackass

My Chia Pet looks like a recovering cancer patient. I turn off the tv, roll over on my side and my thoughts drift to groceries. Pitiful, eh? No matter how tired I am, my mind will start racing and not stop. I don't know if it's the darkness or the silence or the sheer inactivity of laying in bed...and it isn't like I'm thinking "here's what tomorrow's going to be like at work tomorrow"...it's more like "gotta put up the low fat store brand sour cream, and then after that I'll put up Breyer's Pinapple Fruitonthebottom yogurt. 12 packs to a box, shelf fits 24, there are already 11 on the shelf, so I gotta leave one off the back row of 4 so it'll go up and look nice." Over and over again, instead of sleep. But if that's not enough, I'll end up going to sleep during the day watching tv. It's a maddening loop.

And I'll hear the Oreo commercial in my sleep. It's a little jingle that they play every 15 minutes or so over the Muzak system. I seriously have to force myself to type something into this little box, only toward the effort of making sure this place doesn't sit in disuse. But that's okay, I'd rather be rambling on about nothing like this than about a serious, genuine problem. I think I need something to stimulate my brain. That's pretty pitiful. But then again, there hasn't been much to type about. I graduated. I guess that's pretty eventful. It happened pretty cleanly and almost too perfectly. The family came into town, I smiled like I meant it, we ate some cake, they left, and that was that. I don't like all the attention. Highschool ended pretty uneventfully, I suppose. Maybe too uneventfully. I look back at what I took from highschool and see a top-notch education and one or two new friends, and that's about it. Funny, I always thought there would be more to it. That we were all entitled to more. But I guess not. Maybe the more part comes a little bit later.
It's weird...now that graduation has come and gone I've had dreams about people I normally don't even think about, or really even know. I wonder what Freud would say. Probably some hidden or not-so-hidden regret of the past 13 years of public education.
And it's amazing to see me think this way, but I absolutely cannot wait for school to start again. Not so much because I'm excited about college, but because the summer doldrums are starting to catch up. For the past few weeks I've been working 7 days a week, which is certainly less than ideal...though that'll improve a little bit since the scheduler (is that a word?) at work has been giving people too many hours. So now I'll work twice as hard in fewer hours, and still not get the job done. The job sucks. More and more and more and it never ends. It's solitary confinement except you aren't confined, you're actually busting your butt. And the one time somebody talks to you, it's Ms. Sally McMotherington who feels empowered to bitch to you about how all of the organic half and half has sold, and how she'll curl up and die without non-hormonally-influenced cow juice in her morning cup of Folgers. If there's one thing about this job, I've learned how you can take helping people for granted in other jobs. It isn't nearly as rewarding or fun or worthwhile if you can't see the fruits of your labor in the form of happy people. All I get to see is a shelf completely empty of American Cheese slices. But, that's the job, and I guess it's better than sitting at home and being worthless. It's just hard when the only time you have to really relax is from 9-11 in the morning. But school'll come along soon enough.

And to lighten things up, here's a picture of a kung-fu monkey.

Zug

There's nothing more depressing than registering for the draft.

Doesn't really matter, though. Apparently debt isn't the Christian way of doing things.) They showed them at a trip to the grocery store (ever been to Aldi? Ultra-cheap, off-brand, bulk groceries). They had 5 carts and the total was over $800. They drive around in a small bus. They have no tv, no radios, and the children are all home-schooled by their mother. The women never get haircuts and all wear ankle-length, plain dresses, and the boys all wear polo shirts buttoned up all the way to the top, tucked in to khaki slacks, with identical haircuts w/ hair combed to one side.
They are building their own house (and when I say that...I mean they're building it Amish-style. The father and two oldest boys have done it all by themselves...)

But as odd (and...bad?) as this sounds, the children are remarkably well-behaved, and they all seem very happy. It's just so amazing to see this different kind of lifestyle and view on life; it's so radically different, but somehow through the chaos it works.

I won't be having 15 children, though.

TPS Report

This is the pamphlet that a lady gave me today while we were grocery shopping. I think I did very well on the multiple choice...I got raped by the free response, but I still think I did good enough to get a 3, or maybe even a 4. Supposedly you could miss 56 out of 112, half, and still get a 4. Not that it matters, I just need a 2...but at least some satisfaction can come out of knowing I did well on a very hard test.

I also went and got a work permit (for a whole 2 weeks until my birthday...) so I can be the new perishables stocker at the local grocery store. It isn't glamorous or anything, but it's a job. The people are nice, I'm making a cool $7.25, and they say there's alot of room for advancement, especially for a guy like me. That, and there will be no food or customers or perpetual dirtyness or inept management or apathetic coworkers to deal with on a daily basis. I can already sense the vast difference between the level of professionalism and...(is there an antonym for ineptitude???)...required to be successful in management of the pizza and grocery businesses.

Dystopan Visions and Revisions Essay

This long weekend hasn't seemed nearly as long as advertised. Talk about up-to-date.

Anyway, not being Catholic, the decision to make Joeseph Ratzinger Benedict XVI doesn't really have an immediate bearing on my life...but I still find the process so very interesting. Steeped in tradition, fremd und geheimnisvoll, it's such an interesting and truely unique process. It's amazing how big of an impact this election and this man will have on so many peoples lives, Catholic and non-Catholic.
Very interesting decision by the Cardinals. Ratzinger is 79 years old and was JPII's chief advisor. He's even more conservative than his predecessor; he's publicly against women in the church, euthanasia, contraception (narrowminded and ignorant...tell the millions who die in Africa every year that contraception is a bad thing...)and has said in the past that Protestant and Orthodox Christian churches have no legitimacy or power because the Catholic Church is better. If the leader of 1.1 Billion Catholics can't get along with other Christians, how can he be a leader on the world stage?
The Pope needs to be one who can lookat and accept the ever-changing world around him. He needs to be able to mold and form the church to the worldwide society that this has become. A progressive Pope is one that can be a leader in the world, one that can accept and facilitate without giving up the power and solidarity of the church. Many people see progressiveness as liberalness, but it isn't. A progressive Pope doesn't need to promote euthanasia or gay marriage. But he does have to accept that these things exist, and adapt his church to live with them. And Ratzinger will not do this.

But, he's old. It's an interim papacy. Give him a few years, and then maybe someone like Schönborn or Maradiaga who is younger and more progressive can come in and lead the church into the 21st century. Because the Pope doesn't just affect Catholics, he affects everyone.

Folks don't fudge it 'cause you got the juice

Best Commercials Ever

Yes, two Burger King-related posts in the matter of a few days. One man was the representation of the religion, and thus the life, of millions. And now he has died. It's a situation really unparalleled in the world. Millions mourn throughout the world, and as their neighbors and friends we mourn with them and for them.
I think it's sad to say that in my entire lifetime I've never known of a pope that was able to walk well or talk coherently. Parkinson's Disease and knee/hip ailments are enough to cripple a man even of JPII's stature. But 26 years ago he was active and virile, powerful and energetic. The most important and influential Pope in hundreds of years who fought against Communism, War, and Capital Punishment, and also against woman priets, contraception, homosexuals, and interracial marriage. The Papacy of paradox. He fought for equality, but often totally against it. He was very socially conservative, something expected from a conservative Catholic priest.
Saying that, and noting the tremendous influence that this man had on the lives, actions, and beliefs of many people throughout the world and here in my own area, I can't help but wonder if the equally powerful influence of a more progressive Pope wouldn't be beneficial to this 21st Century world. Woke me up, I didn't know what the heck was going on! I jumped downstairs (quite literally) to see big, golf ball-sized pellets coming down like cats and dogs, excuse the cliché.
I haven't really been able to examine my car yet for any dings, but this was certainly the type of hail that damages paint jobs and creates dents.
It was the hardest hail I've ever seen in this state, for sure. But what was weird was the fact that it came so suddenly...my parents were just sitting downstairs reading the paper and admiring the overcast sky when huge hail comes out of nowhere...no rain preceded it or anything. It was a severe thunderstorm, at least according to Mike Maze and the NWS. It was moving at 100 mph, pretty fast even for a severe storm. And all at 7:15 in the morning.

Sorry, I'm a weather geek...this kind of thing fascinates me.

Ich heiße

New name: Heat Fusion. blogspot.com

I was really running out of ideas, but I think it works.

Blogger has alot of things different from Xanga, good and bad.
